Increase Traffic to Your Blog

A little while back I wrote a post on how to be a good blogger.  As sort of a sequel to that, I’m writing this post about how to increase traffic to your blog.  I’ve been researching a little bit, and have found that the settings on my blog are really just about everything they should be (i.e., my blog is set up to ping automatically when I write a post).  However, I was missing a few other things.

I did find a blog post about this very subject over at Seth’s Blog on how to increase traffic.  There are some very good points he makes, but some of it is a bit satirical.  One of the biggest things I took from it was to try to be more a part of a blogging community by linking back and forth to others’ blogs.  This way you’re not limited to being found only by search engines or word of mouth.  This way, there is live interaction with other bloggers and their readers.  Click on over and take a look at his list!

It’s a beautiful day this Wednesday.  And I’m stuck in the back of an office building where there are no windows.

Religious Hate

A comment I received this morning got me to thinking a little bit about religious hate (Thanks Betsy!) and that being the cause for wars.  Why do Christians, who are trying to do right, get blamed for everything wrong in the world?  Maybe I should say ‘true’ Christians.  A true Christian will hate certain things.  But that is not the cause for wars as this reader surmised.

What does a true Christian hate?  A true Christian hates sin, simply put.  What is sin?  The most simple place to start is the Ten Commandments.  Surely everyone is aware of the Ten Commandments?  You know…Thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not steal, thou shalt not bear false witness, thou shalt not commit adultery…  Shall I go on?  Honor thy father and thy mother, thou shalt have no other gods before me.  Oops..I guess that last one is too offensive?  There are no other gods.  There is only one true, living God.

So again I ask, why are Christians blamed for the wrong in this world?  A true Christian doesn’t hate a person – we are told to love our enemies, in fact.  A true Christian hates the sin in this world.  Everyone commits sin – no one is perfect, except Jesus Christ himself.  A true Christian will ask forgiveness for a sin that he or she commits.  He will not live in that sin.  So why are we to blame for what’s wrong in this world?

A true Christian will hate another religion because it is teaching error.  To teach that error is also a sin – it is filled with lies.  But a Christian will not start a war based on that hate.  A Christian will try to teach the truth as laid out in God’s Word.  Wars are not started over this kind of hate.

The kind of hate that wars are started over is the kind that the Muslims displayed when they killed 3,000 people in my country.  It is this kind of religious hate that is taught to children growing up that wars are started over.  In the Islam religion, if one doesn’t believe as you do, they are infidels and deserve to be killed.  Remember – they are the ones calling for Jihad.

Why do people find it so impossible to extend the professional courtesy and spell my name right?  What’s worse is it’s usually right there in an email and they can see it right in front of their face!

Teen Repellant

the-mosquito-1 There hasn’t been much going on in the news lately, except the same ole’ stuff about the election and the latest scandals surrounding it, and gas prices (and how they’re driving the price of everything else up).  So I was browsing the news sites looking for something interesting, and I found a story on a ‘Teen Repellant’.

This device has actually been around for a while.  It actually has been in use in Europe for a pretty long time I believe.  The device emits a high-pitched tone that will eventually hurt your ears if you hear it long enough.  That is, if you can hear it at all.  You see, it was found that teens and adults in their early 20′s could hear higher pitched tones than could most adults over 30.  It just so happens that those higher pitched tones can drive a person crazy (I can hear them – there is a sample sound here if you’d like to see if you can).

The twist now, is that there are several groups that are trying to ban them.  They’ve called the device cruel, and some have likened the sound to fingernails scraping a chalkboard, or a mosquito buzzing in your ear – only you can’t make it go away – you have to leave the area.  I’ve never personally seen one of the devices in use, but I can guarantee that I’d give that store/shop no more of my business if they ever installed one.  For me, it’s an instant headache.

I don’t have a problem with people calling for the ban of these devices, but I don’t necessarily support the ban.  To me, this is the perfect example of the will of the people at work.  If you don’t like the device being installed around businesses, don’t give that particular establishment any more of your business.  I’m of the opinion that if they finally get the idea that the device is actually driving away business, they’ll get rid of it.  For a business, nothing speaks louder than money.

A good while back, I blogged about this device’s sound being used in a totally different way.  A lot of teens have used this high pitch sound as ringtones on their cellphones.  Since their 50-year-old teachers can hear a phone vibrating, but not this high pitch sound, it’s the perfect solution for them to be able to use their phones in school without their teachers knowing.  It won’t work, though, if you get a 22-year-old teacher fresh out of college – he/she will be able to hear it more than likely.

I’ve Been a Bad Blogger…

…but it’s only because I’ve been so busy! Last Friday, Becky and I took the day and spent some time together. We did a little work in the garden, then cleaned up and took off for the zoo. They’ve made a few improvements since we were there last – the new Red Panda Village is finished now. They also had a butterfly exhibit where you walked into a big screen ‘tent’ where you were surrounded by butterflies.

Saturday was busy as well. We went to my cousin’s daughters’ birthday party. She wanted a few photos taken, so Becky and I took care of that. Afterwards we did our grocery shopping.

Sunday was like a normal Sunday. We went to church and had two good services, and in between we went to my parents’ to have our traditional Sunday dinner. I always eat too much and later wish I hadn’t.

Monday and Tuesday were pretty busy for both Becky and me. She has been helping her aunt move, and I’ve been pretty busy at work. When we both got home, we mowed the yard on Monday, and worked in the garden on Tuesday.

So anyway, although it has been busy, no more excuses! Expect some interesting, thought-provoking posts in the very near future. Thanks for sticking with me!

Our Wedding Anniversary

3 years ago today, April 16, 2008, is when Becky and I were married.

It was a good, but sort of a hectic day.  Well, it was for Becky anyway.  She got up early and was off doing all the things a woman does to make herself pretty.  (I’m so glad I’m not a woman)  She did a really good job, too, by the way.

I honestly don’t remember what I did when I first woke up.  I do, however, remember that when I got myself ready to go, I had plenty of time to spare before I needed to be at the church, so I dozed on the couch for a few minutes to relax and calm my nerves.

Once everybody was at the church, things started getting a little more hectic for me.  Everybody was running around doing last minute arrangements, getting pictures done and getting things ready for the reception.  I personally tried to hide as much as I could.

There weren’t really any big mishaps for the day.  Well, Becky’s mom forgot to bring her wedding dress.  But no big deal.  It wasn’t really that important.  Of course, I’m being completely sarcastic.  Her mom was freaking out and thought she’d ruined the whole day – but there was plenty of time for her to go back and get it, so it really was no big deal.  That was about the time that I realized that I forgot to bring the tux for one of my groomsmen.  Becky’s mom picked that up while she was out as well.  Other than that, and something about somebody not being able to find some flowers, things went smoothly.  It was a great day.

So now for 3 years, Becky and I have been growing closer to each other.  We’re still learning about all the little quirks that the other has (does that ever end?) and figuring out how to deal with them.  But that’s ok – she wanted a Wii for our anniversary this year so she could kick my tail in that boxing game.  She got me a very nice watch, which has been much needed for a few months now.

All joking aside, I couldn’t have picked a better lady to spend the rest of my life with.

Try Teens as Adults?

Should teens who commit crimes be tried as adults?  The short answer is that it depends on the crime.  Now of course we can’t just leave it at that – we’re gonna have to talk this about a little bit and try to find out what is going on in these teens’ heads.

First, a couple of disclaimers.  This is an opinion piece.  I’m 26 years old, but I’m a bit old fashioned, and my opinions generally reflect that.  Also, I’m not a psychologist or a philosophical professor moron who thinks he knows everything about everybody.  That’s my disclaimer – read on if I’ve gained your interest.

This conversation has come up in the media quite a few times recently.  The most recent case in particular was the group of cheerleaders that beat up one of their 16 year old ‘former’ friends because she wrote some bad stuff about them on myspace.  They didn’t just slap her like little girls do, no…  They gave her a concussion, damaged her eyesight in her left eye, and her hearing on her left side.  How permanent the damage is, I’m unsure.  At one point in the beating, they knocked her unconscious.  Once she woke up, the beating commenced.  Some people have called these girls’ actions a ‘mistake’ or an ‘error in judgement’.  There was too much planning and premeditation that went on for this to be a simple ‘mistake’.

Ok, so how should teens be tried?  I’ll start with the easy stuff.  If a teen shoplifts or commits petty theft, by all means try them as a juvenile.  Give ‘em a slap on the wrist, maybe a night or two in kid jail and a month or two of community service.  If they continue down the same path, give ‘em two more slaps on the wrist and a week in kid jail.  Then sentence them to 6 months community service and probation for a year.  If they’ll straighten up, then that’s fine – expunge their record at 18 and let them live their life.  However, if they don’t, try them as an adult on their 3rd ‘petty’ offense and give them the full punishment allowed by the law – as an adult.

Now, what if a teenager commits armed robbery?  Woah, now that’s big kid stuff.  They’re acting like a grownup, and are usually robbing from someone well into adulthood.  The courts may not see it the same way that I do, but if anyone possesses the means to do grave bodily harm, or even kill someone, they should be tried as adults for the offense they committed, whether or not it actually resulted in bodily harm to the victim(s).  My reasoning for this is that they possess the means to do it.  Whether or not they actually possess the will, or the mental fortitude to utilize that means is a whole other subject.  I don’t care at all if they didn’t ‘intend’ to hurt or kill someone.  Even if all they intended to do was scare their victim into giving them what they wanted, the victim didn’t know that.  The victim was in fear for his or her life.  That isn’t something to play around with.  It especially isn’t something to just ‘forget about’ when a child turns 18 – when their juvenile criminal record is expunged.

My third category is for someone who basically beats up another person, as these cheerleaders did to this other girl.  In this case, the ‘victim’ instigated everything by saying the things she did.  To me that doesn’t matter.  If she instigated it by physically hitting or pushing those girls around, then to me it’s a bit more justifiable.  But when someone, or a group of people, plans and premeditates how they are going to hurt someone, that is enough of a case for being tried as an adult in my book.  It’s one thing for someone to get pushed around a little bit, slapped a couple of times and maybe even get a couple of bruises – try the offender as a juvenile and let it be done.  But when someone is beat unconscious, and then beat some more – that’s too much.

Lastly, I’d like to cover when a juvenile commits murder.  In my own simple definition, murder constitutes the killing of an innocent individual.  Self defense is not included in this category, obviously.  I also realize there are severe cases of abuse – mental, physical and sexual.  In some cases, I personally would play the self defense card.  I would say that I believe there are cases where a child has no other way out of a situation than to kill the offender.  In most cases, however, the child can run away, either to other family members’ homes, or to the authorities.  However, I would still play the self defense card in cases where the offender was in the process of harming his or her victim, and the victim retaliated with force.  Outside of these circumstances, if a child or teenager commits murder (refer to my definition again), try him as an adult.  End of story.  If they’re capable of it at such a young age, they’re certainly capable of it later on.  Can some be rehabilitated?  Possibly.  But it’s impossible to tell which ones, or how long they will remain ‘civilized’.

Where I believe a lot of the problems come from when kids are into criminal activity is the parents.  I realize that it’s easy to point the finger at them, but it’s where everything starts.  Even in the most severe cases where a woman is raped and conceives a child, she can make good choices on how to raise the child, whether she does it herself, or gives the child up for adoption.  Now, in my opinion, she should only give the child up for adoption if it is impossible for her to care for the child, which really shouldn’t happen all that much.  I do realize there is a lot that goes into making that decision, and I won’t pretend to know everything about it, so please don’t think I’m being inconsiderate.  Also, if you’re someone who is adopting a child, you better know what you’re getting into, and be able to care for that child and raise him properly.

Raise your child right – raising them according to the Bible is really the best way.  If they get into trouble, punish them.  Teach them that there are consequences for their actions.  This way they’ll learn responsibility.  They’ll learn to make better choices as they grow up, and will be less likely to make bad decisions and make criminals out of themselves.
