New Year’s Goal – Update

img-4612A couple of weeks ago I wrote about needing to clean up my desk and office space both at home and at work.  I posted a photo of what my desk at work looked like.  It was sad, wasn’t it?  For the sake of history preservation, I’ve posted that same ‘before’ shot here.

I can’t remember which day I actually broke down and cleaned my desk up, but it looks 100 times better now.  I was truly surprised at how much desk I actually had under all that mess.  Not only that, I’m not raking stuff from my desk to the floor accidentally any more – it’s pushed back out of the way, but within easy reach when I need it.  So, without further ado (Is that how you spell that?), here is my desk today:

IMG_4633See what I mean?  You can barely tell it’s even the same desk.  I feel like it’s a whole new desk.  But alas, it still has the same view of more interior white walls.  I do have a window, but it only looks into the server room.  To get a view of the outside world, I must walk to the front of the office building to the door.  But now I’m digressing completely from the entire point of this entry.

To get things back on track, you should be proud to know that my office at home is also in much better shape.  My desk still needs a little work, but you can walk through the entire office now without fear of stepping on something that will hurt your feet.  I can also get the closet door shut now – that’s always a big plus.

Night Photography

Something I’ve always loved since I was a kid is the night sky.  I bought a telescope with my own money when I was maybe 10 or 11 years old so that I could stare at the moon up close and hunt for planets and all that fun stuff.  Well, I found the moon, but not much else.  Either way, I still love to just stop and look up at the sky on a clear, crisp night.

I can’t remember what year it was, but I once witnessed a full solar eclipse.  For those who get it a little backwards, the solar eclipse is when the sun disappears behind the moon.  It was a spectacular sight!  I know I wasn’t supposed to actually look at the sun during the eclipse, but I couldn’t help it.  I got my sunglasses and looked anyway.  It was amazing to watch.

Something I’ve never stayed awake to watch is a lunar eclipse.  There is one coming up in February.  The night of the 20th to be exact.  Lots of information from NASA, including the exact times of the various stages of the eclipse, can be found here.  I haven’t gotten permission to post it yet, but a member of a forum I frequent wrote up a guide on how to photograph a lunar eclipse.  I plan to get outside that night and try to get some good shots of it.  Depending on how successful I am, I’ll post the results here when I finish putting it all together.

Don’t know why this is so funny to me – maybe I’m just in one of those moods. Thought you might get a kick out of it though.

Cold Snap

IMG_4619I’m not sure how well you’ll be able to see this photo, but on the top right, it shows that it is 8 degrees outside.  This was last Sunday morning.

When I left for church, it was just below 10 degrees.  (This is Fahrenheit by the way)  It almost hurt to breathe.  Surprisingly, my water didn’t freeze up, and I even forgot to leave it dripping to prevent it.

I’m officially ready for Spring now – bring on the fresh leaves and buds on the trees, the flowers, and yes, even the bees & wasps.

Superbowl

footballWell, the Colts didn’t make it, and neither did the Packers.  So, it will be Giants vs. Patriots.  Again, anyone that knows me very well at all knows that I despise the Patriots.  They were caught cheating earlier in the year, but the sports media conveniently leave that little detail out when they mention the possibility of them having a perfect record for the entire season.  Not only are they cheaters, but they have no class.  They’ll run the score up on anybody just because they can.  They’ll leave Brady in even though they’re up by 4 touchdowns.  They put the backup in once, but took him back out because they weren’t scoring.

Anyway, I’ll stop ranting now.  I’m for the Giants if you haven’t figured that out by now.  I’m happy for Eli that he has made it this far this quickly.  The Giants gave the Patriots a good run for their money earlier in the year.  Maybe they can hold them off this time and get the title.  Anything for the Patriots to lose.

NFL Playoffs

Anyone who knows me very well knows that I’m a Colts fan.  Actually, I’m more of a Peyton Manning fan.  You see, he played at the University of Tennessee, and set many records during his time there.  He will more than likely be remembered forever at that school.

When he went pro, he went to Indianapolis.  He didn’t do all that great to start with, but he learned the pro game extremely well.  He learned it so well, in fact, that he is currently one of the best, if not the best quarterback in the NFL today.  The way he reads defenses is probably the best in the league.  To see him change a play at the line of scrimmage is a normal sight.  You’d almost worry if he didn’t change the play.

Alas, anyone who has followed the playoffs knows that the Colts didn’t make it past the first round.  They lost to the Chargers, and it really was a great game.  They kept stealing the lead from each other pretty much the entire game.  But San Diego kept it in the end.

So now who am I rooting for?  GO PACKERS!  I’ve liked watching Brett Favre ever since I was a kid.  I think it’s awesome how he’s come back after the troubles he’s had on the field.  He’s even talking about staying another year from what I’ve heard.  Favre doesn’t approach the game like a job, as most other quarterbacks do, even Manning.  Favre genuinely looks like he enjoys the game – he acts like a little kid out on the field sometimes.  I’d like to see him and the Pack make it this year.

Who’s Out There?

I don’t believe I have that many readers out there, but I know I have *some*.  Drop me a comment and let me know you’re there!  If I’m too boring, let me know what you’d like me to write about.

When the weather starts warming back up, I’ll have some projects going on outside that will be more interesting than what I’m writing about now, so if you’ll stick with me things will get better. ;)

A Totally Fictional Story, Chapter 2

Well, the rebuild was completed and the server was behaving perfectly normal.  That is, until the service desk team got their hands on it.

The entire reason for the rebuild was because it was speculated that a service pack installed on the server corrupted one of the OS’ software pieces that the product relies heavily on.  Now, this was never believed from the beginning or this big company in Redmond, Washington would have communicated this issue to the masses.

So, the rebuild was completed and the service desk team began their task.  Once they were finished, they quickly determined their problem still existed.  After they went over the rebuild steps with a fine-tooth comb, they determined it was the product itself that caused the corruption rather than the service pack, so that proved to be a waste of more than a day’s worth of work.

Now a new test server has to be built to facilitate their testing.  Again, when this request came in, the array of choices for a response was the same, with the addition of "Ill have that for you yesterday, sir!"  Plan for another half day of work on this pitiful excuse for an enterprise product.

Again, please remember that this story is entirely fictional and is not intended to implicate or imitate any particular company, department or individual.

I Thought They Were Fine

Becky finally convinced me to go see an eye doctor.  I figured they might want to give me some reading glasses or something at the most, for when I’m at work on the computer and that sort of thing.

Now, I have noticed that my left eye is stronger than my right eye.  I always thought it had to do with the fact that I’m left-eye-dominant.  If my head was turned in such a way that I could see an object with my right eye only, it was a bit blurry.  But if I turned so that I could see it with both eyes, it would come into focus just fine.

I passed all of the tests with flying colors, except the part where you actually read the chart – my right eye is worse off than I thought it was.  Again, I knew it wasn’t as strong as my left eye, but I didn’t know it was 20/50.  My left eye is 20/20, but even it isn’t 100% clear at 20/20.

So, I get to start wearing glasses.  I’ll probably be able to pick them up in about a week.

New Year’s Resolutions

It seems like everyone makes them, and they’re always the same.  I want to lose x amount of pounds, or I want to manage my money better.  I used to make a resolution, but I’d quickly forget about it in a couple of weeks time.

IMG_4612 This year, I have set a couple of goals.  One of them kicks me in the face every day.  This is a small picture of what part of my desk at work looks like.  My goal, is to fix it.  And keep it fixed.

A little while back – it may have been during Christmas break – I took some time to work on my office at home.  I cleaned up my desk pretty well, although it still isn’t quite finished.  But it looks a lot better than the one at my job.

Overall, this goal is simply to be more organized and neat.  Anyone that knows me very well knows this needs to be addressed.  So I am.  Slowly, but surely.

As soon as Becky reads this, she’ll be telling me for the rest of the year about how I made it a goal to be more organized.  Hopefully she’ll do it in a loving way, rather than as a result of the frustration from trying to wade through all the junk in my office floor.  This of course means that I’ll need to try to stay a step ahead of her so that she’ll have no reason to be frustrated because she stubbed her toe on one of my old boat anchor computers.  I plan to (someday) get that out of the way. :)

So, now I’ve shown my cards.  I’ve made it known.  I’ll be held to it now – I’m done for.
